Female Video Game Characters Designed By Women

This Twitter Thread Highlighting Female Representation In Video Games Is So Important

"She was the first character that looked like me."

For Women's History Month, Black Girl Gamers, an internet community for, you guessed it, Black girl gamers, asked, "Who was the first Woman game character that resonated with you?"

Who was the first Woman game character that resonated with you? We asked BGG! From @pastelbat90: "Ikora from Destiny 2. The first game I truly fell in love with and to have an unapologetic Black Women spoke so much to me"

As expected, these women chose absolute icons, like Catwoman from Catwoman :

From @TTV_xSinSisterx: "This is gonna sound suuuuper weird but Catwoman 🤣 because we both just trying to get our coin while making guys gall to their ever lasting demise but I also liked the game play. I hadn't thought about this game in a long time 💀"

And Aveline de Grandpré from Assassin's Creed :

From @valkyrievice: "Aveline Dr Grandpré from Assassin's Creed. I honestly think she was the first Black Women I had seen as a main character in a game. Although her game was set during slavery, I did enjoy the fact that she was actively fighting against that injustice."

Zombie slayers like Ellie from The Last of Us :

From @tinykittykat: "Ellie from The Last of Us because she was the first woman character I had ever played that was strong, independent, capable, and whose value to the story was not just as a romantic interest of the male protagonist. She had a full personality."

And Clementine from Telltale's The Walking Dead :

From @bintrajan: "Clementine from The Walking Dead. Despite everything that's happened to her at such a young age (ie. a whole apocalypse), she embodies resilience, strength, and courage. She honestly shows just how Black women get it done!"

Women of all body types like Kassandra from Assassin's Creed: Odyssey :

From @sailorhoodie: "Kassandra from AC Odyssey! The story works for both her and the male protagonist so her experience in game isn't affected by gender. She's just this badass woman existing without the confines of gender norms. Also I can't not love a lady with muscles lol"

Twitter: @blackgirlgamers

And Harper from Fortnite :

From @SourceDuMal: "Constructor Harper from OG Fortnite is the first fat Black woman to be a playable character ever. And that struck me because for decades, women characters were always skinny!!!!"

Characters that highlight natural hair flawlessly, like Bangalore from Apex Legends :

From @DebTheAuthor: "Crazy (maybe not) but Bangalore in Apex. She's not only Black, she had that shirt thick curly hair, isn't built small and has that deeper voice 😍"

And Niobe from Enter the Matrix :

From @jayannlopez_: "Niobe rom Enter the Matrix. Based off of Jada Pinkett-Smith. I loved those Bantu knots 😍 and she was kick ass."

And last but certainly not least, those like Jade from Mortal Kombat who continue to inspire years after being released:

From @ivyfeenix: "The first character I felt represented by was Jade (Mortal Kombat). She was the first character in the 90s that actually looked like me and was a powerful character. Gave me hope for more brown, female characters in the future"
