Websites That Start With T

While this might seem just a bit strange, I'm working on a small project that involves me trying to figure out within a rough guess, just how many mainstream websites there are that start with a certain letter. I've tried places like the classic Dmoz directory and Alexa.com, but none of them have anyway of showing me how many websites start with a certain letter (as far as I could see).

Now, realize that I'm not talking about the whole web here. I'm just talking more about what services/website people sign up for. The Alexa top 500 does seem to be about the best place to start, but is just not quite what I'm looking for.

Let me know if what I said made any sense whatsoever.

Might not get you where you want to be, but might help ballparking:

Search in Google for "www.f site:alexa.com" where the"f" in "www.f" would be the letter you are looking for. Since Alexa lists a grunchload of sites, statistically it might give you a good number. Unfortunately duplicates on the same page will not be counted.

Also remember that 72.3% of all statistics are made up.

understand the question just don't really know how you will ever be able to get relative info that is any where near being accurate to what you want......

I'm not looking for accuracy as much as I am looking for an idea (ballparking it) of how many website names start with this letter.

Find a linux box and a DNS server. use dig to query DNS for A records that have a name that starts with your desired letter. A query for all A records (within the zone of the DNS server) would be "dig @<servername> -t A"

Well, that did not seem to work.

Plan B: go to http://cqcounter.com/whois and use the domain index to narrow your search.

This is a tough job. you may want to script it.

I didn't even think of using Google to do this kind of search. Excellent. Simple, and It works. It should give me the rough estimate that I need. Now . . . to do this 26 times. Thanks PalmerTM and everybody else who commented.

All those websites that start with a number are going to be ignored? Poor little guys.

Actually PalamarTM (forgive me for spelling your name wrong the first time), I ended up finding http://www.alexa.com/topsites . On the very right of the page, it says 'Free Download' -- It's a list of their top million websites in CSV form. Perfect. I cut the CSV down to 5000 entries and organized all results by first letter. I did get every single number site on the list too (which happened to be a fair percentage of the results). Still, thank you very much.
